Substances & Sobriety in Activism

November 1, 2021 · 5:30 pm · 7:00 pm

Join the Community Democracy Project (CDP) for a fishbowl discussion about how substance use appears in organizing spaces: from choosing where to host happy hours, to books on the subject, to the experience of burnout. This conversation is open to all who want to share or listen. CDP's events include a set of community agreements (see below) which are reviewed at the beginning and attendees are requested to follow.

The fishbowl format encourages free-flowing conversation. 3-4 people will be unmuted at a time to talk to each other. A facilitator keeps track of who is in line to speak and unmutes a new person when a current speaker indicates they are finished.

------------------------------------

CDP is committed to supporting our volunteers in maintaining a space free of harassment and oppressive power dynamics. If someone or something is or has been harmful or upsetting for you, we want to know. We will make space for discussion. We will think critically about any incident so that we can support growth and learning without tolerating bullshit.
During any meeting, any attendee may call a "vibes check." A vibes check consists of a go-around in which each attendee is invited to check in about how they are feeling and why.

The core of our code of conduct is the community agreements:
1. One diva, one mic (only one person should be talking at a time)
2. Be aware of time
3. Be curious
4. We can't always be articulate
5. Distinguish between impact and intent (both matter, and good intentions can have negative impacts)
6. No one knows everything, together we know a lot
7. Move up, Move up (to speaking or listening)
8. Communicate for community, and speak for yourself (Please bring up if something seems wrong, but remember not to speak for others)
