Greetings, friends of the Community Democracy Project,

Hope you’re all enjoying this beautiful week  here on the sunny side of the Bay. Here is this latest dispatch from CDP:
Politics….
*Three of our members attended the City Council District 7 Candidate Forum last week, to hear candidates Sheryl Walton and Beverly Williams speak on their vision for leadership and policy in East Oakland, and to submit questions about citizen engagement (incumbent Larry Reid was not present). Both candidates showed a clear commitment to the district, but innovative policy solutions–let alone those that put residents front-and-center–were scarce. We left feeling doubly motivated to change the conversation about community issues, and create truly empowering and democratic leadership models.
Politics…
*Speaking of elections…we’ll be turning our conversation to November 2012 in the coming weeks. While our initiative isn’t on the ballot yet, our ears are tuned to the election developments locally, statewide and nationally. We’re interested to hear about your work on campaigns and candidates–tell us what you’re up to!
And more politics…..
*And speaking of getting on the ballot, we’re deep in organizing mode, spending our Saturdays out on the streets talking to folks about community issues and local decision making. We’ve gotten an overwhelmingly positive response, and will be sharing video and photos from our adventures soon. We’ve visited downtown, Grand Lake, the Laurel, East Oakland, Fruitvale–and we’re heading to North Oakland this weekend. Come break bread with us, chat about the campaign, and team up to continue the conversations with people in the community. We’ll do a brief training–beginners and seasoned organizers welcome 🙂 12 pm to 3 pm; meet at Good Bellies cafe. RSVP to Shawn at imagin…@gmail.com or 626-676-3636.
*Coming soon….a CDP slogan survey. We’ll be looking to your keen ears and wordsmith wits to help us choose the best slogan for our business cards, website, flyers, and other schwag.
Thanks for your support, and we’ll see you at a CDP Street Team Saturday soon!
