Community Democracy Project

Welcome to CDP, Oakland’s all-volunteer campaign for a more democratic budget process! The Community Democracy Project (CDP) promotes active citizenship, community learning, and direct democracy by putting the people in charge of the budget. Our voter initiative will change the Oakland City Charter so that we the people decide how our tax money is spent. Greetings Friends of CDP, both old and new!

We are excited to kick CDP into high gear this fall!

To Catch You All Up On The Latest:

**We are revamping our website to include more forums for political discussion, resources on understanding the city budget, links to our blog sites, and more!

**The Hack the Budget App-a suave app that easily connects us to our city budget and its programs is on its way.! After weeks of pressing the city to deliver us information on the budget, an East Bay Express article exposed the city for their lack of correspondence, and the very same day, we received the data we had been asking for! (how’s that for the power of the press?)

**BBQ THE BUDGET, coming to a local park/neighborhood near you. We look forward to building connections over delicious food! Stay tuned for our BBQs in October!

***Join us this Saturday to hit the streets to talk about controlling our money to change our city. We’ll meet from 12 pm to 3 pm; at Hardy Park in Oakland on the Corner of Hudson and Claremont. RSVP to Shawn at imagin…@gmail.com or 626-676-3636.
***We always welcome new faces of folks who would like to be involved at our weekly Tuesday night meetings. RSVP to communitydem…@gmail.com if you would like to attend! : )
Thanks for your support, and we’ll see you soon!

08/30/12 Newsletter: Politics, Politics, Politics…

Greetings, friends of the Community Democracy Project,

Hope you’re all enjoying this beautiful week here on the sunny side of the Bay. Here is this latest dispatch from CDP:
Politics….
*Three of our members attended the City Council District 7 Candidate Forum last week, to hear candidates Sheryl Walton and Beverly Williams speak on their vision for leadership and policy in East Oakland, and to submit questions about citizen engagement (incumbent Larry Reid was not present). Both candidates showed a clear commitment to the district, but innovative policy solutions-let alone those that put residents front-and-center-were scarce. We left feeling doubly motivated to change the conversation about community issues, and create truly empowering and democratic leadership models.
Politics…
*Speaking of elections…we’ll be turning our conversation to November 2012 in the coming weeks. While our initiative isn’t on the ballot yet, our ears are tuned to the election developments locally, statewide and nationally. We’re interested to hear about your work on campaigns and candidates-tell us what you’re up to!
And more politics…..
*And speaking of getting on the ballot, we’re deep in organizing mode, spending our Saturdays out on the streets talking to folks about community issues and local decision making. We’ve gotten an overwhelmingly positive response, and will be sharing video and photos from our adventures soon. We’ve visited downtown, Grand Lake, the Laurel, East Oakland, Fruitvale-and we’re heading to North Oakland this weekend. Come break bread with us, chat about the campaign, and team up to continue the conversations with people in the community. We’ll do a brief training-beginners and seasoned organizers welcome :) 12 pm to 3 pm; meet at Good Bellies cafe. RSVP to Shawn at imagin…@gmail.com or 626-676-3636.
*Coming soon….a CDP slogan survey. We’ll be looking to your keen ears and wordsmith wits to help us choose the best slogan for our business cards, website, flyers, and other schwag.
Thanks for your support, and we’ll see you at a CDP Street Team Saturday soon!

08/15/12 Newsletter: Building the Movement, Hitting the Streets

Greetings supporters of the movement to put the people in charge of
public resources in Oakland!

Normally we only send out one email per week, but a bunch of new folk
have been signed up to our email list and we have updated info for
everybody about upcoming actions.

What makes the Community Democracy Project
(http://communitydemocracyproject.org) strong is that, beyond
discussing issues amongst ourselves and saying “If only there was a
movement…” we are hitting the streets and, person by person, helping
build the movement that will change the way people relate to
government and public policy in Oakland and beyond.

If you are tired of being a spectator to history and want to help make
history…
If you are tired of business-as-usual-politics and want to change the game…
Join us.

*The responses of people in the communities we have been surveying
have been amazing. We have been learning a lot about the issues that
people care the most about, and almost everyone we meet thinks our
proposal to put the people in charge of the budget is a good idea. As
is often the case, it seems the organizing work will be less about
convincing people the idea is good than it will be about helping
people see that, by working together, we can win. But this is a
fundamental problem of our age, and one we gladly and boldly confront.

*This Saturday our street teams are conducting surveys and chatting
about local democracy and people-powered budgeting with people around
the Grand Lake Farmers’ Market. Meet at 11:30 am in front of the Kwik
Way Burger Joint at 500 Lake Park Avenue. We’ll chat over food at the
Farmers’ Market, do an orientation and mini-training for new folks,
then spread out in teams. RSVP so we’ll know you’re coming and we’ll
bring enough of our new snazzy CDP badges.

*Speaking of snazz…now that we have our logo design down and are
starting to expand our visibility, we need help snazzying up our
website. If you or someone you know is a good web-designer, holla.

*Do you live or work in Council District 7? As the City Council races
get going, we’ll be making the rounds at the candidate forums, and we
invite you to come out, too. We want Council hopefuls to take a stand
on community-based decision-making, and plant a seed for all in
attendance! The District 7 candidate forum will be held Wednesday,
August 22 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Allen Temple Baptist Church
8501 International Blvd. Oakland, CA 94621. Email Sonya at
sonya…[email protected] if you will be there!

*We continue to work with the folk of OpenBudget:Oakland (formerly
known as Hack the Budget) to design and develop an app that will help
the people of Oakland both understand and critically engage and
discuss the city budget. The web
interface-http://hackthebudget.herokuapp.com/ -will soon get a major
overhaul, including drill-down capabilities allowing people to view
specific programs and funds. Stay tuned!

*Our regular strategy pow-wows happen Tuesdays at 8. If you wanna come
to the next one, let us know and we’ll send you the details as the day
approaches.

All the best =)
